Menopause Causing Eczema Flare Up? | Ask Yvette
Hi Yvette!
Since I’ve started going through the menopause phase, I’ve been having frequent eczema flare-ups. Primarily around my eyes, cheeks and mouth. It looks awful and make me feel awful. My doctor is dismissive about the whole situation. As anyone else had these kinds of experience and do you have any suggestions?
Oh gosh! I have a friend who has similar issues and before she found her solution, she was almost scratching herself raw, especially during her sleep.
Having skin problems is often mentioned during menopause and is caused by the dropping levels of the oestrogen in your body. It can manifest itself from just dry skin right up to eczema such as yours which is very unpleasant.
Assuming your doctor has been dismissive appears to indicate that they have checked for any other potential causes (allergies, exposure to irritants, autoimmune response, etc) , am I right to assume that they have no particular solutions “because it’s the menopause” and we should all just put up and shut up?
Some GPs will prescribe a steroidal cream to see if that can help to relieve the situation and stop the skin from flaring up; however these creams should not be used long term, as this itself can result in thinning of the skin which is not exactly what you need! I have tried and can recommend the use of
- Starflower Cream (Napiers is good)
- Colloidal MSM-Silver Cream – silver is really good with wound healing and can be used in the manufacture of plasters and bandages for this very purpose.
I would also suggest speaking to your GP (perhaps a different one in your instance) about the use of either medical HRT or natural phytoestrogens to help boost levels in your body.
So overall, it’s a 2-prong approach to use the oestrogen from within and the creams to sort the skin from the outside.
Fingers crossed this works for you!
